Businesses generate more operational information than ever. When information is spread across different systems, spreadsheets, reports and departments, understanding what's actually happening can take time. Better visibility brings the information that matters together, helping teams identify what needs attention and make more confident decisions.

The problem isn't always a lack of data

Most businesses aren't short of information. Orders, inventory, purchasing, finance and customer activity all generate valuable data every day. The challenge is that this information doesn't always come together in a way that makes decision-making easy.

One team may be looking at sales. Another is monitoring stock. Finance has its own reports, while managers may rely on spreadsheets or information pulled together manually.

Individually, each provides part of the picture. But important decisions rarely affect just one area of the business.

A change in customer demand can affect purchasing and inventory. Rising costs can influence margins and pricing. Delayed orders can create pressure on customer service and cash flow.

This challenge is reflected in our latest industry benchmarking. 54% of respondents reported being only somewhat confident in their real-time stock visibility across branches, highlighting how difficult it can be to build a clear operational picture even when the underlying data exists.

Visibility also affects the people using business systems every day. Almost a quarter (24%) of respondents cited a lack of real-time data or visibility as a source of frustration with their current ERP or business system.

The issue, then, isn't simply whether businesses have data. It's whether people can access and trust the information they need when a decision has to be made.

Without a connected view, understanding the relationships between different areas of the business becomes harder.

Decisions get harder when information arrives to late

Traditional reporting helps businesses understand performance, but it often focuses on what has already happened.

If a margin issue only becomes clear at the end of the month, opportunities to respond may have been missed. If changing demand isn't identified until stock starts building up or shortages appear, the business is already reacting to the consequences.

Giving people access to current, reliable information helps them identify change earlier and gives them more opportunity to decide how to respond.

Better visibility helps you see what needs attention

Operational visibility is about connecting information so teams can answer the questions that matter:

  • Are sales increasing but margins falling?
  • Is customer demand changing?
  • Where is stock beginning to build up?
  • Are operational delays affecting customers?
  • Which areas need attention now?

Instead of spending time gathering and checking information, teams can focus on understanding what it means and deciding what to do next.

Identify the Gaps Making Decisions Harder

Can your teams access the information they need? Is it current enough to act on? Do different departments have a consistent view of what's happening?

Use our Decision Confidence Scorecard to assess your current visibility and identify where information gaps may be making everyday decisions harder.

The right information for the accurate decisons-making

Making the right information accessible to the right people at the right time is key.

  • A managing director may need to understand overall performance and emerging risks.
  • Purchasing needs visibility into demand and stock.
  • Finance needs to understand costs, margins and cash flow.
  • Operational teams need to know whereproblems are beginning to affect everyday activity.

When teams are working from consistent information, less time is spent checking figures or waiting for reports so more time can be spent deciding what action to take.

Better visibility helps businesses stay in controle

Throughout Weather the Storm, we've explored how businesses can protect margins, improve operational efficiency, control costs and manage inventory more effectively.

Each of these challenges depends on good decisions.

And good decisions depend on being able to see what's happening clearly enough to act.

Greater operational visibility can help businesses identify change earlier, understand what needs attention and make more informed decisions about what to do next.
